American Society for Microbiology

ASM committed funding to improve patient quality of care through strengthening clinical excellence, training laboratory staff, and disseminating scientific knowledge for the Public Health Laboratory in Mandalay, Myanmar.

In 2015, with the support of the American Society for Microbiology, Fondation Mérieux USA and the Diagnostic Microbiology Development Program (DMDP) provided equipment and a four-month training session for laboratory technicians at Myanmar’s Public Health Laboratory (PHL) in Mandalay. Since 2010, Fondation Mérieux has been working under the umbrella of the Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, which has been working in Mandalay, Myanmar since 2005. As a result of Fondation Mérieux’s efforts in Mandalay, the Public Health Laboratory is now providing high-tech laboratory diagnosis and monitoring services for patients living with HIV. Continued mentoring and training at PHL Mandalay is intended to support the goal of the PHL to become a reference microbiology laboratory at the national level.
