The Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux of the Institut de France awarded the 2018 Christophe Mérieux Prize to Dr. Patricia Brasil of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for her research on pregnant women infected with the Zika virus and neonatal complications.

In Mali, the Mérieux Foundation organized training for eight doctors and eight lab technicians on basic medical analysis laboratory techniques. The training is part of the LABOratoire MEDical de CAMPagne (LABOMEDCAMP) project, which establishes laboratories in front line community health centers in order to improve the quality of biological diagnostics and, in turn, the healthcare available to rural populations, particularly mothers and children.

During its 5th International Committee Meeting in Bamako earlier this month, the RESAOLAB project took stock of its phase two achievements and shared the laboratory project’s next steps. The meeting included a workshop on antimicrobial resistance as well as a round table on the future of young researchers in West Africa.
